Blogging Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much does it cost to start a blog?
Estimated costs to start a blog that includes a domain name and web hosting is under $ 100 a year (less than $ 10 a month). This cost is based on a self-hosted blog (using WordPress). The cost sharing would be: $ 15 a year for a .com domain name and about $ 60 a year for the online hosting fee.

2. How are bloggers paid?
To get a better view of how bloggers get paid, I categorized them into 2 types - one is where you deal directly with clients or advertisers and the other is where you join a program offered by a company or network.

When dealing directly with clients or advertisers, you have more control over prices. You can earn money by:

- Selling premium content (membership page)
- Direct Advertising
- Selling your product
- Working boards
- Writing and publishing sponsored posts

3. How to start a free blog?
There are numerous platforms where you can start a free blog today, this includes WordPress.com, Tumblr or Blogger. To create a free blog, all you have to do is sign up and start publishing your content.

4. What is the catch behind a free blogging platform?
Nothing comes free in our world. There are a number of disadvantages with a free blogging platform:

- There are rules laid down by each platform that you must abide by
- Your blog's domain name appears to be a subdomain such as "myblogname.wordpress.com" or "myblogname.tumblr.com"
- There are limited functionalities, plugins and theme selections you can do on your blog
- Usually, free platforms limit the chance of monetizing your blog

I strongly suggest starting your own blog using a self-hosted WordPress.org (like the one I covered in this guide). Besides exceeding the limit of free blogging, the potential growth of your blog is limitless.
